Gis

I have owned several Gis or Doboks over the years.  When I was practicing Hapkido my favorite was an old Swain Judo double weave Gi.  I don’t think they sell them anymore, but the thing is a tank.  I have had it for over 15 years, and there are no rips or tears, just some fraying around the collar.  The sleeves are too short for BJJ, so after some research I purchased a white Inverted Panda 3.0 gold weave – https://www.invertedgear.com/.  I am 6’2″, 220 Lbs, and the A3 size is a good fit.  I was looking for something with minimal advertising and patches on it.  I have had it for about a year now, and it is wearing very well, with minimal shrinkage.  I wash it with cold water, and tumble dry with no heat.  There are many types of weaves when choosing a BJJ Gi, this is a good article explaining them – https://fightersmarket.com/blogs/fighter/gi-weaves-whats-the-difference.

When you start taking classes at a school, most schools will include an entry level Gi with you initial start up.  That is great for starting, but you will eventual want something that is a bit higher quality, more comfortable, and durable.  Look at what the more experienced students are wearing, most will have several.  Ask them what they like and dislike about the different Gis they have as you make your decision.  Then, keep an eye out for sales, most Gi sellers will have deeply discounted sales on very popular models, and you can get a very high quality Gi on sale.  Pay attention to the specific sizing for different manufacturers, as it will vary.
